All about Manchesters famous dog breed

Did you know that Manchester has its very own dog breed? The Manchester terrier was originally bred for killing rats, but these days is more of a family companion and show dog. With a smooth black coat, rich mahogany markings, almond-shaped eyes, and curved body, the Manchester terrier really is a dog of great stature.  It comes in two varieties – the standard Manchester terrier, which weighs between 12 and 22 pounds, and the toy, which weighs less than 12 pounds.

How did the Manchester terrier come about?

Interestingly, the Manchester terrier is a product of breeding a whippet and a black and tan terrier, and breeding from these dogs has given us the Manchester terrier we see today.

Whats the breed like?

The Manchester terrier has an inquisitive and independent nature and can make an excellent guard dog. However, they need plenty of companionship and can turn to barking and digging if stressed or lonely. This type of dog is a fast learner and responds well to praise, treats and rewards – and theyre very clever, so be prepared to be outwitted!

As the Manchester terrier was bred to chase after vermin, its often in its nature to chase after small, furry animals, and they can be aggressive towards other dogs. Therefore, it is often best to walk them on a lead when in busy, public places.

Finally, this smooth-haired, pointy-eared dog breed is a people-loving beast and enjoys living in the house close to its owner(s), and thrives on human companionship. Do you own a Manchester terrier? Show us your pics on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
